Contrary to popular belief, a guitar will not sound that great if it is made out of a cereal box. Bow River Specialty Woods knows what I'm talking about. This Canadian company (based in Chiliwack, BC) specializes in supplying the best wood for the craftsmen and luthiers alike. They also completely respect the enviornment throughout the harvesting of their woods, which is an issue of worldwide importance these days. And they are good quality. Building a guitar from anything purchased from Bow River Woods will not be the base of its criticism, that's for sure. Also worth mentioning is the fact that they now retail other supplies such as: bridges, nuts and saddles, pickups etc., so you won't have to do ridiculous store hopping to gather your supplies for building your guitar! For this review, I sampled a Sitka Spruce body blank, the wood for the guitar I'm currently building. I've had no problems with it-- though I haven't heard what it sounds like yet-- but it's a fine piece of wood so far. I have only good things to say about it. By the way, when you're buying a body blank, don't get the wrong idea. The website thumbnails show cut-out bodies, but they are really two blank pieces of wood, not cut out blanks! Click on the thumbnails and you will see the full shot of the wood, as they are when you receive them. |
Bow River Woods supplies professional wood supplies that are reasonably priced, but might not be the greatest idea for the amateur builder. If you were looking to make a really great (or even moderately great) guitar, then I would recommend Bow River in an instant. But if you're looking to just experiment with building your very first guitar, it may be better for you to find a cheaper alternative, which won't be a big waste of great wood when you ruin it. Building your first guitar is no walk in the park, kids! Just remember that the wood is a crucial factor in the value, sound, and comfort of playing your guitar. It is a proven fact that bad wood produces bad guitars. And I doubt you will ever find bad wood at Bow River Woods. Still unsure? Visit their website http://www.bowriverwoods.com/. I'm a sucker for Canadian guitar woods and this company is almost there. They've got the goods to be a top supplier, that's for sure. 4/5 |
